How do I remove white residue of double-sided tape from wood?

I have a wood door and wanted to get rid of the double-sided tape. I used rubbing alcohol but it just created a white residue that probably came from the tape. It is clear when wet, but it dries white. I can scrape it off, but not completely. How do I get rid of it? And the tape?

A varnished wood door?

Nail polish remover (acetone) will strip the finish. WD-40, which has a naphtha base, isn’t a bad choice.

You might want to try linseed oil, lemon oil, or even vegetable oil from the kitchen first.
